One skill that you shouldn’t take too lightly is sensing and reading other people’s energy. In the business world they call that a soft skill. Good communicators would say it’s a communication skill. I say it’s a psychic skill.

The reason I label it such: You’re going beyond the five senses of sight, sound, touch, taste and smell to get a sense for who a person is behind the mask they show the world.

When you can read energy effectively, you may have the ability to:

  • Sense when someone is lying to you.

  • Pick up on a colleague’s jealousy even when they’re smiling in your face.

  • Know when your child is struggling even when they say everything is ok.

  • Feel someone’s romantic interest in you before they show it.

  • Feel someone’s romantic interest dying before they tell you.

  • Know when to lean in and when to back off during an important conversation.

  • Avoid interacting with a narcissist or other type of dangerous person.

How sensing energy can help you in the real world

I know you’ve probably read about sensing energy in a book. But what’s the purpose of getting all esoteric if you’re not going to use these skills in your day-to-day life?

For me, knowing how to read energy (and trusting it, hello) has helped me to climb the corporate ladder and it’s saved me from a potentially scary situation.

First the corporate ladder experience: When I was contemplating taking a certain job that did not come with the salary I wanted, I was leaning toward not taking it. But I changed my mind when I met the person who would be my manager during one of the endless rounds of interviews. I could sense the positive vibes this person was giving and I could feel that he respected my work even though he said nothing to give me that impression. I also felt comfortable around this person and felt like he would advance my career. His energy felt warm and tingly to me. I took the job and it was one of the best professional experiences I ever had — and the money I wanted eventually came.

So now for the scary experience. I was at a Mexican restaurant with a friend and a man in the bar area made me uncomfortable. He didn’t do anything to me; in fact, he never looked my way. But the energy emanating off of him felt suffocating to me and I convinced my friend that we should leave. A couple of weeks later, I saw that man again, but on the news after he had committed an act of mass violence. While I don’t think anything would have happened that night I saw him in that Mexican restaurant, I knew he was unsafe because I felt his energy. And that was enough for me.

Ways to start sensing energy

Reading energy isn’t some skill that only special people have. Anyone can start to develop it. Here are some steps to take to get better at it.

Note what energy feels like in your body when you are alone. When you’re sitting around minding your business, how do you feel? Physically? Emotionally? Are you generally calm? Are you anxious? Whatever feelings you typically have when you’re not around other people is what I call your basic energy blueprint. Notice this. Ponder this. Lean into this. This.Is.Your.Energy.

Next, note what energy feels like in your body when you’re around other people. You’re going to notice a subtle shift. This.Is.Not.Your.Energy.

You’re going to notice that the way energy feels in your body will likely change as the people around you change. You may feel tense around certain people and then relaxed when they leave your presence. You may feel a knot in your stomach when a certain person comes around. Whether you’re in a room with people you’re familiar with or strangers, note that your body will often react as the makeup of the room changes.

Some people have unique ways in which their intuition conveys energy to them. You may feel a tingling down the left or right side. You may notice an ache or pain whenever a certain person is around. You may feel itchy. Don’t judge what happens, simply take notice.

Fun psychic exercise: Go to a coffee shop, buy your drink and sit there for a period of time. As people come in and out, note the changes in your body. You may tense up when one person is around and find yourself feeling cool, calm and collected when another person is nearby. Don’t judge the experience or do anything. Simply notice how the energy changes with the people who come in and out. You’re reading energy.

Some people pick up on the energy of others and don’t realize it; they hold onto that energy, believing it’s their own energy. Learn how to sense the energy of others and let it go. Some steps you can take to do that include meditation, deep breathing, removing yourself from the presence of others, or taking a brisk walk.
